Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently Asked Questions ✨

  • While our work when it comes to overnights are very similar, the short answer is no.

Just like regular nannies, night nannies do not undergo a specialized training or certification process. If they do, it’s either a Postpartum Doula or Newborn Care Specialist training.

If someone is calling themselves a “night nanny” this means they have not completed any formal training and likely only have childcare experience, which could mean anything between babysitting when they were a teenager or being an RN! This does require more due diligence from parents looking for care. (I would also like to note that this does not mean that they are untrustworthy! It’s simply a layer of non-verification.)

With Postpartum Doula training (which we require at minimum), not only does that show a commitment to this work in supporting new parents, this also involves the doulas going through a training organization that acts as a 3rd party verification.

When it comes to parents inviting us into their homes to care for their babies, we strive to maintain the highest level of care possible!

  • Your doula arrives at your home at 9pm, but often a few minutes early to get situated - hands washed, bag put away and ready for the shift.

She will check in with you and see how things are going with feeding and if spend some time chatting with you to answer any questions that may have come up since the last time a doula was with you.

She will jump in with washing any left over dishes from dinner, check to see if laundry needs to be switched over and make sure the nursery is stocked for the night.

You can head to bed whenever you are ready! If you want to hand off your baby so you eat ice cream and watch Love Island in peace, than you can do that too. But most parents choose sleep, especially in the early days.

Once your baby is fed (either nursed by you or given a bottle) your doula will soothe your baby and practice transferring to the bassinet or crib. A lot of babies don’t love not being held, so it can take some time to transfer successfully. But not to worry - helping you set these sleep habits is what we are there for!

As your baby sleeps safely in their bassinet or crib, your doula will make notes of feeding, soothing, diapers and anything else worth noting. Once everything is done, she is able to snag a nap close by your baby so she can catch early hunger cues.

She will navigate feeding, diapers and soothing through the night.

As the shift comes to an end at 7am, she will make sure the nursery is tidied, any bottles or pump parts are washed and you are set up for the day!

If you are still in bed, no need to see your doula out. She will bring your baby to you and see herself out.

  • Yes! When you speak with Mary at your initial consult, she will discuss with you your goals for overnight support & help you build a custom support package. However, once your baby arrives, we can adjust your schedule to your needs - whether that means adding more support or dropping nights that you may feel like are not needed.

  • We recommend booking services during your 2nd trimester at the latest! Many of our families book us shortly after a positive pregnancy test (and even when they begin their ttc journey), so availability disappears quickly!

If you are reading this in your 3rd (or 4th) Trimester, do not fret! Please reach out to us. Sometimes availability opens up, our doulas may have change in their schedules and able to take an extra night, or we may have added to our team!

  • Yes, we absolutely do! All of our professionals are well-versed in working with multiples. We help you maintain sleep routines, keep track of feedings & offer you tips that will help those first few months of navigating parenting multiples go smoothly.

  • Helping breastfeeding mothers reach their feeding goals is something we are very passionate about! And having overnight support can be an immense relief in that journey. While we are not lactation consultants (some of us are lactation counselors though), we are familiar with how to support a breastfeeding mother in the early days, weeks & months.

We will bring your baby to you to nurse, offering support and advice as needed, and take care of everything else in between so you can get as much sleep between feeds as possible.

Having overnight support is a helpful tool for a lot of mothers in successfully breastfeeding their babies.

  • We believe that when it comes to the health of a newborn baby and a postpartum mother, there is no other standard than full transparency and the utmost caution! If the doula who is scheduled with you is ill or anyone in her home is ill, you will be notified and we will either have another doula on your team step in or we will offer a backup to fill in. You can decline a backup if you do not feel comfortable with adding someone new, and we can adjust the schedule until your doula is well again.

  • When we offer you a back up doula, that means a Postpartum & Newborn Care Professional who is actively working with Oh Baby! KC, but is not on your designated team.

We do not pull back ups from outside of our agency - either from other agencies in the area or from the doula community as a whole.

  • You are more than welcome to reach out if your baby has already arrived! While we do book 8+ months in advance, sometimes we have families who wrap up early and we have the availability to fit in families coming to us from No-Sleep-Land. We LOVE being able to bring sleep to exhausted parents!

If we do not have room however, we will contact other agencies and providers in the area on your behalf and connect you will someone much faster than if you were searching on your own.

  • First step in our process is reaching out. You can schedule a call with Mary & fill out our application form here.

On your call, Mary will answer all of your questions about our services, help you build a customized schedule, and walk you through next steps.

You will then receive your client portal which will have the contract and invoice for the retainer (for info on the retainer, see the FAQ portion on our Investment page). Once we have a signed contract and retainer, your spot is held and your name will be on our schedule!

Mary is available for any questions you have after that point and will be in touch with check ins, to schedule classes and to confirm your schedule as you approach your due date.
