Who We Hire — and Why It Matters
At Oh Baby! KC, we take our role in families’ lives seriously. We are trusted to walk into homes during one of the most vulnerable and transformational seasons of life. That trust is sacred, and we honor it by hiring only those who reflect the highest standards of professionalism, compassion, and integrity.
Due to the growing complexity of our field and the importance of professional alignment, Oh Baby! KC does not typically hire doulas or night nannies who are actively working with, or have recently worked for, other local agencies. Exceptions may be made on a case-by-case basis with strong professional references and a demonstrated alignment with our values and standards of care.
This policy is in place to protect our team culture, ensure consistency in the quality of care, and uphold the trust that families and fellow professionals place in us.
So You Want to Be a Postpartum Doula or Newborn Care Specialist?
If you’re curious about getting into postpartum work and don’t know where to start, you’re in the right place.
I’m Mary, and I’ve been a Postpartum Doula & Newborn Care Specialist for nearly a decade. I've built and mentored a tight-knit, high-performing team of professionals serving families across the Kansas City area. I’ve also worked as a birth doula, midwifery assistant, parenting educator, and life coach — and I know how transformative this work can be when done well.
Let’s talk about what we actually do.
What Does a Postpartum Doula or Newborn Care Specialist Do?
We support new parents. We do not replace them or push any particular parenting style. Our job is to provide emotional, educational, and physical support so that families can rest, recover, and thrive.
Emotional Support
Holding space during emotional moments
Validating birth experiences
Reassuring parents who are doubting themselves
Educational Support
Teaching basic newborn care
Answering postpartum & newborn questions (or finding the answers when we don’t know)
Connecting parents with qualified, trusted resources
Physical Support
Light household tasks so parents can rest
Caring for baby while parents shower or nap
Supporting overnight feeds so families can get real sleep
Providing basic sleep advice
We are not medical professionals (unless you are a licensed RN or IBCLC), so we do not wear scrubs or call ourselves "night nurses." We work within our scope and show up as calm, professional support people.
Minimum Requirements for Joining Our Team:
Infant CPR certification
Background check
2 letters of recommendation (from clients, previous employers or other professionals in adjacent fields)
Liability insurance
Set up an LLC
We also strongly encourage continued education through workshops, books, or additional certifications. We want lifelong learners on our team!
What It’s Like to Work With Oh Baby! KC
Independent Contractor Model: You are free to take your own clients outside of the agency if you wish.
Values-Driven Matching: Families are matched to doulas based on their needs, availability, personality, and preferences.
Team Culture: We believe in community over competition. You won’t always get the contract, but we guarantee you'll be supported, respected, and treated like a valuable part of our care network.
Real Talk About Workload: There are quiet months. This is the nature of our work. We plan classes and internal gatherings to stay connected, but we also embrace rest.
Flexible Entry: Many of our doulas ease into this work while holding other jobs. That’s totally welcome.
Please note: Completing training and submitting an application does not guarantee placement on the team. We are thoughtful about every hire.

Who Thrives on Our Team?
Our doulas come from all walks of life: stay-at-home moms, nurses, teachers, artists, musicians, military spouses, and lifelong caregivers. The common thread? They care deeply, communicate clearly, and show up for families and for each other.
